Ep. 12 - The Quiet Part, Out Loud

using metaphors and our voices

MARCH 22, 2025 • ISSUE 11

The Quiet Part, Out Loud.

Hey, Reader!

I had so many plans for this newsletter—including the glorious reveal of the best three-ingredient gluten-free pancakes I’ve ever whipped up. I tried one more combination, experimenting with yolks instead of whites (because science), and let’s just say... we’re not quite ready for brunch just yet. The pancake journey took an unexpected turn, and while the results weren’t terrible, they also weren’t newsletter-worthy. But there’s one more combo I want to try before I call it. I know, I know—you were here for the cakes.

Also—full honesty here? This issue is a bit behind schedule, and it's not just the pancake chaos. The real reason? I’ve been running my butt off (virtually speaking) playing full-time realtor for a family member. And when I say full-time, I mean house-hunting, offer-writing, stress-managing, snack-carrying, emotional-supporting realtor. It’s been a brutal two weeks— because... I AM NOT A REALTOR. LOL. But the offer was accepted last night, and I couldn't be prouder.

So, no pancakes today. But next episode, I promise. Or at least... pancake-adjacent wisdom.

This week’s theme? Using our voices. In my latest blog, we're going a bit behind the scenes. Give it a read, then swing back here for more insights!

In this weeks newsletter:

  • A Song, a Knife, and the Truth: I was slicing veggies when Billy Joel hit different—and just like that, the words came rushing back.
  • This Week’s Truths & Questions: From metaphor magic to answering real DMs, I unpacked what it means to stay quiet, speak up, and tell your story your way—without hopping on everyone else’s bus.
  • Milestones, Mugs & Moments That Matter: I hit 100 pounds down on this leg of the journey (252 total!). I found my favorite mug again, cried happy tears in the kitchen, and laughed way too hard at an old house that gave major Home Alone vibes.

The Downeaster Alexa Part II

I was standing in my kitchen, knife in one hand, Billy Joel in the air (“The Downeaster Alexa,” because obviously). A song I’ve heard a hundred times suddenly hit me sideways—and just like that, the story came pouring out. Not the one about the boat, but the one about me. And how metaphor finally gave me the space to say what silence had been swallowing..

THIS WEEK'S BEAN BITES

Sometimes silence isn’t peace—it’s paralysis.
And reclaiming your voice means learning how to speak again without screaming.

Metaphor isn’t hiding.
It’s translating the emotional chaos into something someone else can actually feel.

Not everything I write is about you...
...but if it hits? You might want to check whose shoes you’re standing in.

Your voice never left you.
It’s just been waiting for you to stop apologizing for it.

Now that you've read that...

🤔 THOUGHTS TO SIP ON

  1. What story have you been carrying silently that deserves to be told?

GIVE IT A GO

Consider these questions to kickstart journaling this week or explore your thoughts more intentionally

🏆 YOUR CHALLENGE THIS WEEK

Think of one moment where you swallowed your words to keep the peace. Just one. Write about it—not for anyone else, just for you. Give it a name. Give it a voice. At the end of the week, reflect on how it felt to finally let it out—even a little.

KEEP IN MIND

Your voice doesn't need to be loud to be powerful. Hit reply and share your thoughts or ask me a question - I might feature it here, but don't worry, your name stays between us.

❓SPILL THE BEANS: QUESTION(S) OF THE WEEK

Q: "I saw your post about Kate! Are you taking on new clients? How did I miss that"

A: I appreciate and am truly honored that anyone would want to work with me. Honestly, I think a part of me was quietly waiting until I hit some “goal” before I allowed myself to step fully into 1:1 coaching. Which sounds ridiculous now that I say it out loud. I think somewhere along the way, I unintentionally disqualified myself.

But working with Kate came at the perfect time—like a little whisper from above that this was something I was meant to step into again. I knew instantly it would stretch me, teach me, and light me up. And it has.

With that said, I’m not taking on new clients just yet—but I will be later this spring. I promise I’ll let you all know the moment I have space.

Q: "Athena! What was the inspiration for the school bus article? "

A: Ah yes—the Bus Stop Dilemma. The idea came after I received a DM that started with, "You know Athena, I love your journey... but..." (you know those ones). What followed was a message essentially telling me I was downplaying people’s concerns.

This particular person was an affiliate owner with a high LGBTQI+ population, and they were upset about the recent CrossFit Games policy reversal around transgender athletes. Their frustration was valid but people make a lot of assumptions when they only view from a distance. The bus story was born from that exact pressure because although people are weighing a lot of different factors when choosing to stay affiliated, I was specifically addressing financial concerns or added value.

☕ FRESHLY BREWED: WHAT I'M READING, WATCHING, OR THINGS THAT MADE ME SMILE THESE LAST TWO WEEKS

🌱 One-Liner Magic – Someone commented, "That boat story hit harder than Fran." I laughed for a solid 4:00 min.

🌱 My Favorite Mug – I found it. Again. After losing it. Again. There’s something about sipping from the right cup that makes the day taste better.

🌱 Weight Milestone Moment – I just hit 100 pounds down on this latest leg of the journey—bringing the total weight lost to 252 pounds so far.

🌱 Historic Homes & Home Alone – I cannot stop laughing. I follow this account called For the Love of Old Houses because I’m obsessed with anything built in the 1700s and 1800s. So I find this listing for $975,000—looks charming, I’m intrigued. I get to the second photo in the carousel and BAM—instant flashback to that one scene in Home Alone. You know the one. I haven’t stopped laughing since. And my DM responses just keep getting better and better.

Whether you’re whispering it or shouting it—your truth deserves to be heard. Let this be the week you stop shrinking from your story. Speak. Write. Swear if you have to. Just say it.

You’ve bean through enough.
Now let’s hear you.

Your friend, 💖
